Toughened glass is, on average, around four times stronger than ordinary float glass. This makes it ideal for properties that are at risk of damage. This added durability may avoid damage on the glass, saving you money in the long run. Speak to our team today if you have any further questions about the suitability of installing toughened glass on your property.
Toughened glass, when hit, breaks into small and relatively harmless granules. This differs from float glass, which breaks off into shards that are far more hazardous and harmful. Call one of our experts today, who will be able to talk you through further benefits that your property can have through the installation of toughened glass.
Toughened glass is far more resistant to both heat and direct impact, making it the ideal glass type to be installed in frames that are located in critical and possibly hazardous positions around your property. With the way it shatters, it also makes the debris left over from a break far less dangerous to clean up.
What do we mean by 'critical areas'? Critical areas can be defined as being the most likely locations that accidents can be caused by glass breakage. This is aimed at protecting areas that can result in cutting or piercing injuries. Under safety glass regulations, glass that is of safety standard must be installed in areas that are below waist height, or 800mm from the floor. Click on our chart below for a more visual representation of this.
Areas that come under this include low-level glazing, door panels and glass panels directly beside the door, public-facing areas such as commercial buildings or schools along with any glass that is over 1.2m² in size. It must also be noted that glass within 300mm from the edge of a door, and wholly or partially within 1,500mm from floor level must be safety glass.
For all enquiries into whether your glass needs to be toughened, contact us today on our freephone number. Our team of experts will be able to suggest the best plan of action for what you should expect. Our glaziers will then measure up the elements and inform you of any toughened glass replacements that need to be made.
Unfortunately, due to the make-up of toughened glass, we are unable to cut into the glass on site. It will therefore need to be sent away to be manufactured. Toughened glass is designed to shatter into small pieces when hit, meaning once manufactured it cannot be cut into without breaking into pieces.
Toughened glass is essentially float glass that has received thermal treatment to balance out any possible internal stress within the structure of the glass. As a result of this treatment, the glass increases in strength and resiliency toward temperature and impact. From this treatment, toughened glass becomes up to four times stronger than float glass panes.
If you need the toughened glass to be made for your frames, we will need to get the glass manufactured and will install on a repeat visit. If you already have the glass, we can install on our first visit, but bear in mind, this will be at the customers' risk.
Under safety glass regulations, all glass under 800mm from the floor must contain safety glass. Glass panels that are under 250mm wide can contain 6mm glass or laminated. See our chart above for more information on critical locations.
